Gardening tools

By Abby

There are many tools used in flower farming, and each of them has a different specific task.

The trowel is a staple, best for digging small holes for seedlings or bulbs and transplanting delicate plants with care.

Pruning shears have very sharp blades and are essential for trimming branches and shaping bushes to encourage healthy growth.

Snips are used to harvest and scissors are used to cut twine and open soil bags.

Garden markers are used to identify seedlings and to label the seed trays. At Florista we track the dates when seeds are sown and when they are ready for transplant.

A garden fork is used for turning compost and aerating to improve drainage. At Florista we maintain two compost bins and rotate between the two. We gather all the leaves and stems from post harvest and stop them in the compost pile.

A shovel is used to dig in the beds.

A hoe is used to lightly weed the flower beds. Weeding is a regular task we do at the flower farm and a hoe helps keeps up the task.

The watering can ensures plants receive the right amount of water, delivering a gentle shower to beds and flowers. It is a very simple tool, but effective.  We also have a emitter system for watering the flower beds. We use a combination of watering can, emitter , hose and sprinkler system in the flower farm.

An earth seeder makes a trench, drops the seed and covers it. It makes seed sowing quick and easy! We most often use the earth seeder to sow Sunflower seeds.

A T-Post digger drives tall t-posts into the ground easily.

We use an auger bit with a power drill to dig into the soil. It is very useful when planting big bulbs/tubers like Dahlia tubers.

These tools, each designed for a specific purpose, enable people to nurture and shape their outdoor spaces.
